This summer, Rippon Lea Estate Mansion and Gardens will again be home to one of the most beautiful outdoor cinemas in Australia.

Coming to Barefoot Cinema at Rippon Lea Estate is like stepping back in time. The magic begins as soon as you step through the gate and you walk along an enchanting path that leads to the majestic Rippon Lea mansion which is sure to leave you speechless.

The path opens up to what may well be the most stunning gardens you’ve ever seen. From there, you’ll see a beautiful lake, the big Barefoot Cinema screen, the mansion in the background, a food truck, live music and a fully licensed bar. All of these things will make the Barefoot Cinema experience at Rippon Lea Estate one to remember.

How to get there

If taking a train, the property is just a five minute walk from Ripponlea Station, on the Sandringham Line. Check the timetable here.

Take Route 67 to get to Rippon Lea Estate, stop 42.

Take Routes 216 or 219. There is a stop directly outside Rippon Lea Estate. Ask the driver to set you down at the first stop after Glen Eira Road. Check the timetable here.

Uber / Taxi is a great way to get to Barefoot Cinema. Just ask your driver to drop you at 192 Hotham Street, Elsternwick.

If you wish to drive please be aware there is no parking on-site at Rippon Lea Estate. However, there is limited local parking available in the surrounding streets.

Seating arrangements

General admission seating

No seats are provided in the general admission area, but there is plenty of room for your own beanbag, picnic rug or low back chair. It’s also pretty comfy on the grass!

Pleases keep the other guests in mind when choosing your spot as it won’t be much fun for someone spending the whole night looking at the back of your chair. There will be designated areas towards the back or sides of the venue for anyone with a high back chair.

Jalna VIP Lounge

Treat yourself with an upgrade to the Jalna VIP Lounge and make this a really special night out. Each VIP upgrade includes:*

  • your choice of a reclining chair or beanbag within our premium seating area;
  • a free drink and popcorn;
  • complimentary blanket hire; and
  • waited service during the film.

There are no allocated seats in the Jalna VIP Lounge, so make sure you arrive early to get a good spot for you and your friends.

*VIP upgrade tickets are only valid together with a general admission ticket.

History of this site

Rippon Lea Estate is Australia’s last suburban 19th century Estate and one of the most historic homes in the whole of Australia. Built in 1868 for Sir Frederic Sargood and his wife, Marion, as their dream home and garden. Rippon Lea Estate consists of the mansion and an outstanding 14 acres of garden.

Rippon Lea Estate was first opened to the public on 22 Feb 1972, attracting more than 100,000 visitors during the first three months.

Barefoot Cinema acknowledges the Boon Wurrung people of the Kulin Nation as a Traditional Owners of the area of Glen Eira. We respect and recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples history and heritage and their continuing spiritual connection to the land and seas. We value their living culture and practices and their right to self-determination.
