Comedy, Drama, Cult Classic

In collaboration with Melbourne Queer Film Festival, Barefoot Cinema presents Stephan Elliot’s Oscar-winning Australian film icon Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

Two drag queens and a trans woman leave Sydney in a bus called “Priscilla”, and travel across Australia to put on a show at a resort in the middle of the country. Along the way, they break down, paint the bus lavender, dress up a lot, perform where they shouldn’t and encounter hilarity, hostility and incomprehension. This cult classic is a road movie musical about a collision between three people in the wrong costumes and an environment that does not want them.

Reviews

It's a tremendous film that was ahead of its time on LGBT issues and, in some ways, is ahead of ours.

The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert presents a defiant culture clash in generous, warmly entertaining ways. For all its glitter, this is the sort of film in which everyone becomes happier and nicer by the final reel.
